Rob Zombie To Remake The Blob...Sort of.
When I heard about the information that supported this headline, I laughed. I actually sat in front of my computer, read the information, quietly blinked for about 2 seconds and started laughing. Here's why: in a news report Rob Zombie said he wanted to remake The Blob movie...without the blob.
In Variety's report, Rob Zombie said this: "My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing — that’s the first thing I want to change," So...er...why call it The Blob then? I understand there is a length of artistic license with things but does this make sense to anyone else?? Isn't that like saying you want to remake Flipper...without any dolphins? To clear up any questions about why he chose to leave out the famous "big red blobby thing", Rob Zombie offered this: "That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now. I have a totally different take, one that’s pretty dark."
The remake is being produced by original, The Blob producer Jack Harris and his wife Judith, Rob Zombie, Richard Saperstein, and Brian Witten with a $30 million dollar budget.
The Blob that was originally released in 1958 starred Steve McQueen and is basically thought of as a horror movie classic. In 1988 The Blob was remade by director Chuck Russell and introduced chillingly innovative effects that left everyone afraid to peek down a sink drain. Both movies followed a theme about an asteroid crashing to Earth containing a strange ooze that consumes anything in its path, including humans, and grows at an alarming rate.
I love the original Blob film and I'm somewhat disappointed to hear that Rob Zombie is redoing this movie. Granted, his House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects movies generated some positive buzz, but he seems to have fizzled out with the Halloween remakes.
What do you think of Rob Zombie redoing The Blob?
