Bioshock Gets New Director
Ahhh...video games and movies. Try as the two might, they just don't seem to mix. Which, as a gamer, is a swing and a miss for filmmakers in my opinion. I'd really like to see a great game made into a great movie, and so far I'm hopeful for a couple of projects I've heard about, Bioshock being one of them.
Originally helmed by Pirates of the Caribbean director, Gore Verbinski, Bioshock had been ready to go for some time, as it was announced over a year ago. However, the studio put a pretty quick stop on things when the budget escalated to over $160 million dollars. All was pretty quiet and in an interview with the Los Angeles Times Verbinski said this about the slow down: "The bottom line is it has to shoot out of the States for budget reasons and my schedule may be prohibitive. There’s a great script and a really interesting cast. It really comes down to the financial model now. Big movies are just not being shot in the States.”
Universal Pictures did indeed moved the film overseas and as hinted in the above quote, Verbinski's schedule had a conflict which left a rather large vacancy in the director's chair. Enter 28 Weeks Later writer/director, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Verbinski will remain on the project as producer.
I really want things to work out for this movie, I wasn't too involved with this game but the time I did spend with it was fun, exciting and almost enveloping experience. The world you're presented with is on a pretty big scale, so when things start to downhill because of budget reasons or get trimmed down, that's always a reason to worry. What do you guys think?
