Willem Dafoe has joined the cast of the Disney adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's John Carter book series. The film entitled, John Carter of Mars will be directed by Andrew Stanton and has already brought actors Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins on board.

The screenplay, which was written by Stanton and Mark Andrews, is based on a civil war solider who is transported to Mars where different races are fighting for planetary control. Dafoe will play the leader of the Thark race, Tars Tarkas. Tarkas believes that the only way his people can survive is if they can avoid war altogether.

The film is scheduled to start production early in 2010.
