In a ginormous opening, Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince became the film to have the highest grossing midnight showings of all time. The movie grossed an amazing $22.2 million during it's midnight showings which were held in 3,003 theaters nationwide starting at 12:01 am.

The previous record, held by The Dark Knight, was $18 million which also opened on a Wednesday. This new record also beats Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith's midnight earnings of $17 million.

Additionally, this showed a huge jump from the midnight runs of the last Harry Potter movie which came in at $12 million. The sixth installment of the Harry Potter series will expand to 4,275 theaters on it's first day of release and again to 4,360 theaters on Friday.
