Microsoft Puts A Hold On Halo Movie

Poor, poor fanboys. I mean there is only so much excitement a fanboy can take in one week. Well, that's not entirely true. They typically can withstand a lot when following the movie industry and production studio's highs and lows. It's a good thing to, because this week the Halo fanboys have been through quite a bit.

It all started two years ago when Peter Jackson had made the announcement that an unknown director by the name of Neil Blomkamp, was going to make his directorial debut with a big screen adaptation of Halo. However, fans of Halo were not happy with the decision to give this movie to a director who had yet to make a name for himself. (something I think bit them in the ass now that Blomkamp has made District 9) They criticized the choice of director and created such a negative response that the movie was ultimately placed on hold.

Until late last week, when none other than Steven Spielberg voiced an interest on making an adaption of Stuart Beattie's screenplay. On Friday, IESB reported that: "Spielberg is blown away by writer Stuart Beattie’s take on the game in his script entitled HALO THE FALL OF REACH". So the timing seemed right for the Halo film to be made. After all, it had what seemed like a killer script, and a legendary director with works like E.T., Jaws and Indiana Jones under his belt! Not to mention that Dreamworks studio was really wanting a summer tent pole after it lost Transformers to Paramount. Really, what else did the movie need!!??

How about permission from it's multi-billion dollar parent company, Microsoft to come out and play. And in a move that has many people scratching their heads for the reason, it seems that Microsoft has not only been sent Halo to it's room, but grounded the project as well, because the movie is not looking like it's coming out for a while. A popular gaming website, Kotaku tried to verify that the project was indeed moving forward, only to be given this response: “We’re glad there’s still a lot of enthusiasm in the entertainment industry surrounding the idea of a Halo movie. That said, the Halo feature film remains on hold as we focus on projects like Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach.”

I've played the first Halo a few years ago, and as a gamer I'm not sure why Microsoft would do this. I mean the game was fun to play, but really, after the several other installments many people classify Halo as the type of fps where, "if you've played one, then you've played them all."

Another thing not only gamers but gaming developers understand is that every game, no matter how popular it might be, has an extremely short shelf life. There are a few exceptions to this rule, like WoW, which never seems to die. For the most part however, trying to prolong the shelf life or trying to create a buzz for a game long after the hype for it is over, can potentially have a huge backlash.

For whatever reason Microsoft chose to do this, it seems the Halo movie is firmly on hold...again.

Poor, poor fanboys.
