The Sunday Couch Classic Intro

Have you ever gone over someones house who has an awesome DVD collection...that's gathering dust? I know a few people like that, myself included.

When I was growing up though no one's movie collection came close to my Dad's, my collection today still doesn't come close to his. (He's got Dr. No and Yentl on LaserDisc, no not DVD, LaserDisc.) Even with that huge collection though one thing I remember is that every once in a while instead of taking us to the movies, he'd choose one of us kids to pick out a movie from his collection. He'd crank up his surround sound system, turn off the lights so we get the "movie effect" and my mom would make popcorn or sometimes root beer floats. We'd watch that old movie and remember all over again why we loved it.

So in remembrance of those days and hopefully to create some inspiration for people to dust off their movie collections and relive some of their favorites, every Sunday I'll bring you: Sunday Couch Classics.

For Sunday, June 28th: Willow
Genre: Fantacy/Sci-fi/Adventure

The Cover Reads...
"When young Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) finds and abandoned baby, he is suddenly thrust into an adventure filled with magic and danger. According to an ancient prophecy, the sacred child is destined to end the reign of the evil sorceress Queen Bavmorda. (Jean Marsh) Now, with only a single swordsman (Val Kilmer) at his side, Willow must overcome the forces of darkness that threaten to destroy anyone who stands in the Queen's way!"

The Ups
This movie is just fun. There's a great balance in this film because it doesn't take itself too seriously but not so completely that you can't feel the tension or the drama when those moments come around. To me this is one of Val Kilmer's best works, he really shines in this movie. He's supported though by a great cast and an original plot that ties this whole story together really nicely.

The Downs
Ok so it's a fantasy flick and in my experience people either love them or hate them. Also as I mentioned above this film doesn't take itself to seriously so at times it's a bit goofy but to me that added to the charm, for others it might not.

The Wrap-Up
I love watching this movie, I always walk away from it laughing. Great overall performances by a cast directed by Ron Howard in addition to a completely original story make this movie work beautifully.
